We have videos encoded via bitmovin.com and provided as HTTP Live Streams (Fairplay HLS), but subtitles although in WebVTT format are exposed separately as direct URLs for the whole file, not individual segments and are not part of the HLS m3u8 playlist.

However, the sample code loads local mp4 file from bundle and I am struggling to make it work for m3u8 playlist via AVURLAsset. Actually, I am having problem to get videoTrack from the remote m3u8 stream as the asset.tracks(withMediaType: AVMediaTypeVideo) returns empty array. So to begin I'll describe what I'm trying to do. My backend server is Azure Media Services, and it's been really great for streaming different resolution video as needed but it just doesn't really support WebVtt. Yeah you can host a file on there, but it seems it cannot give us a master playlist that includes a reference to the subtitles playlist (as Apple requires). It seems both Apple and Microsoft decided what they were going to do with subtitles back in like 2012 and haven't touched it since. At that time they either didn't talk to each other or deliberately went opposite directions, but they happen to have poor intercompatibilty, and now devs like us are forced to stretch the gap between the behemoths. Many of the resources online covering this topic are addressing things like optimized caching of arbitrary streamed data, but I found those resources to be more confusing than helpful. All I'm wanting to do is add subtitles to on-demand videos played in AVPlayer being served by Azure Media Services with the HLS protocol when I have a hosted WebVtt file - nothing more, nothing less. I'll start by describing everything in words, then I'll put the actual code at the end.
The !!!yourCustomUrlHere!!! you use in step 2 will have to be detected by you when it's used for a request so you can return the manufactured subtitle playlist as part of the response, so set it to something unique. That Url will also have to use the \"CUSTOMSCHEME\" thing so that it comes to the delegate. The subtitle playlist is a little more complicated. You have to make the whole thing yourself. The way I've done it is to actually grab the WebVtt file myself inside the DataTask callback, then parse the thing down to find the end of the very last timestamp sequence, convert that to an integer number of seconds, and then insert that value in a couple places in a big string. Again, you can use the example listed above and sniff network traffic to see a real example for yourself. So it looks like this:
If using a streaming service where you can edit the streaming manifest and upload other files where your encoded media is, then with a little bit of manual work (which could be scripted out), you can put the subtitles in the manifest in the way that iOS expects it to be. I was able to get this to work with Azure Media Services, although it is a little hacky.
While watching the beautifully-mastered disc I felt I was seeing the movie for the first time thanks to the subtitles. Especially at the beginning of the movie as the protagonist and his undercover CIA team are at the Kyiv opera house. Watching this in the theater I got the general idea of what was going on but there were moments where I was completely clueless.
Thanks to the subtitles I learned Sator was trying to figure out where the artefact was placed and the protagonist told him he kept it in the BMW. Subtitles help a lot for this hugely complex scene in the warehouse, which some dialogue is heard in reverse to play on the inverse world.
In all fairness, yes, people in Hungary speak Hungarian. Also, the TV folks provide subtitles. I am sure they believe that solves the problem, but for some of us, it does not. (I also have the same problem when they show a flash of a phone screen so the audience can read a text. That, however, is not within the parameters of this page.)
Has anyone come up with a brilliant solution for subtitles I ask because I have not. I either keep going and become even more confused, or I try to read the subtitles and get maybe the first, two, or three words, or I try to pause the video.
Pausing the video so I can read what is on the screen is a catch as catch can affair. I am rarely if ever able to instantly hit the button to pause right on the subtitle I want to read. I then have to hit the 10 seconds back button and be on guard for the instant the subtitle comes on the screen. If I miss the moment this time, the process happens all over again. With any luck, I can pause the video at just the right moment that will allow me to read the subtitle at leisure.
I went online to see if there are any, better solutions to this problem. Some people asked if a text-to-speech app could be used on subtitles. Several different people on several different sites said this would not work. It has something to do with the subtitles being embedded in the signal and not a separate text message.

Captioning is modulated and stored differently in PAL and SECAM 625 line 25 frame countries, where teletext is used rather than in EIA-608, but the methods of preparation and the line 21 field used are similar. For home Betamax and VHS videotapes, a shift down of this line 21 field must be done due to the greater number of VBI lines used in 625 line PAL countries, though only a small minority of European PAL VHS machines support this (or any) format for closed caption recording. Like all teletext fields, teletext captions can't be stored by a standard 625 line VHS recorder (due to the lack of field shifting support); they are available on all professional S-VHS recordings due to all fields being recorded. Recorded Teletext caption fields also suffer from a higher number of caption errors due to increased number of bits and a low SNR, especially on low-bandwidth VHS. This is why Teletext captions used to be stored separately on floppy disk to the analogue master tape. DVDs have their own system for subtitles and captions, which are digitally inserted in the data stream and decoded on playback into video.
As CC1 and CC2 share bandwidth, if there is a lot of data in CC1, there will be little room for CC2 data and is generally only used for the primary audio captions. Similarly, CC3 and CC4 share the second even field of line 21. Since some early caption decoders supported only single field decoding of CC1 and CC2, captions for SAP in a second language were often placed in CC2. This led to bandwidth problems, and the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recommendation is that bilingual programming should have the second caption language in CC3. Many Spanish television networks such as Univision and Telemundo, for example, provides English subtitles for many of its Spanish programs in CC3. Canadian broadcasters use CC3 for French translated SAPs, which is also a similar practice in South Korea and Japan.
